The 19th day of the month of the Serpent
With the end of the arc coming soon, I decided to head up to Grand Adventures Comics in Murfreesboro, TN for their Torn Asunder / Coils of Madness draft event.
This was my first time to Grand Adventures since they started playing L5R again. Murfreesboro / Nashville area used to have an extensive L5R playgroup and I am glad that the players have returned.
The event had 10 players so they had two Councils of five players. We drafted with 3 packs of Torn Asunder and 4 packs of Coils of Madness and all Rares, Full Bleeds, Foils and Tokens were removed from the packs before we began drafting.
Typically in most draft formats, honor is stronger than military. I realized that it would be difficult to draft honor with the Coils of Madness packs but I wanted to test out the theory anyway so I decided to force honor as my win condition. I knew that Scorching Lash was a strong draft card so I looked to draft Shugenja. I also knew that The Tale of the Disgraced was in Coils of Madness so I also was looking for Magistrates. I thought I had done a decent draft considering the honor based cards I was passed.

David is from the Clarksville, TN group and a devout Mantis player. I’m going first this game and David’s top card that made a holding was a Yoritomo Tansen. Glad I didn’t have to see that guy this game. Sadly though, this game digressed quickly. David brought a Forgotten Bay Dojo on turn 1 and followed up on turn 2 with Hida Chiyurei and another boxable (Ikoma Natsu xp I think). My turn 3 consisted of a Suikihime’s Sanction on a Kitsune Yuribara, a box honor gain (14), and a proclaim on Yuribara (18) bringing a Butterfly with her. David’s turn 3 consisted of a Destrier on his Cavalry guy and Chiyurei’s Axe on Chiyurei. I knew I was in some trouble. He sends Chiyurei at one province (Infantry) and I defend with Yuribara. He sends Natsu xp at another province (Cavalry). I send the butterfly to meet its doom at that province as I noticed it was Cavalry. I believe David starts with the Cav guy. I pass. He uses Forgotten Bay Dojo to raise his follower’s force to 4. He then plays A Close Call making his unit 9F. Knowing that neither of us had used the box ability this turn and knowing I had another battle to try and win, I concede that province. Now to deal with Chiyurei. He is already at 5F, has the box ability, and the tactician trait. I don’t remember exactly what happened except that I ejected from that province and keep him from taking it (saving Yuribara in the process). On my next turn, I used the box ability (20), lobbied for the favor, proclaimed a Tamori Tsuchiya (23), and left gold up for the swing back (holding spells). Tsuchiya was defending against Chiyurei and a Lion Cav guy with the follower.
Me: Tsuchiya gets a Scorching Lash and shrinks Chiyurei (7 – 3)
Opponent: Tsuchiya get shrunk by the box ability (7 – 1)
Me: Tsuchiya gets a Path to Inner Peace and uses it (7 – 3).
Opponent: Plays Death of the Winds, Plays The Tale of the Disgraced bowing the Lion Magistrate to bow Tsuchiya (effectively 7-0)
Me: Play Avenging the Fallen (7-3)
Me: Use box ability to give Tsuchiya +2F (7-5)
Me: Use Tsuchiya ability sacrificing Path to Inner Peace (7-10)
Opponent: Chiyurei Tactician a 4 (11-10)
Whoops! I had the favor and didn’t use it. Why did I forget the Imperial Favor? Simple. I didn’t bring a physical copy in with me before we started so I had something else proxying the Favor but my mind didn’t register it as the ‘Favor’. While I saved the province that attack, I was still way back on my heels and then my Dynasty side decided to mess with me (Colonial Dojo, Doji Hoturi Inexp with the gold to proclaim him, down to 2 provinces and Second Battle of Beiden Pass shows up) and that ends my game in the early 30’s of honor.
A rematch? I asked Dan about that and he said we were the lowest two seeds. I tried to get him to re-pair but he didn’t seem to be concerned with it so I didn’t push it. I think he was using the WoW tournament software on his tablet but I am not sure.
This game Dan went first and abandoned the P’an Ku plan with all my high PH guys. This game was very similar to the previous game with Dan except that he was tentative to attack. By the time I got Doji Hoturi Inexp proclaimed, I was in the mid 40’s in honor and that prompted the concession from Dan.
Christopher Hand ends up winning the event after a well laid plan in the finals.
We had several very nice cards to draft at the end of the event including a Kitsuki Judgment, 2 Eye of the Sword, A Threat Enacted, Harbor of Kalani’s Landing, Improper Papers, In the Right, 2 Vital Pathways, Without Mercy…and that was just the Torn Asunder rares.
|Slim Pickens after the hot cards are gone…|
All the players were nice and fun to be around as always, even when playing against a Kolat.
If you are planning on drafting with Coils of Madness, be wary of drafting full defensive honor. So many of the cards have an honor loss attached in this set with the Fudo Rings, the Fallen peeps, the P’an Ku guys and the Dark Naga.
It can be done but it is difficult to get all of the pieces with just 2 clans. Suikihime’s Sanction really helps with that problem though as you can draft other clan’s high PH personalities but it makes choices difficult as I made a couple of mistakes during the draft portion (not drafting a Daidoji Ibara, missed drafting a second The Tale of The Disgraced because I forgot I had so many Magistrates).
