It is with a heavy heart, I have decided to announce my retirement as Master Silk. I have mulled over this decision for quite some time now and I do not cut off my top knot lightly. Still, I feel I must step aside for several reasons:
Distance to a Playgroup
I have attempted to get a group started locally, but players are only interested in Magic and the store is not a fan of Fantasy Flight Games partnership with Alliance. As such, the only way for me to get to play in person (which I prefer) is to drive up to Murfreesboro, TN. It’s around a 45 minute drive each way and many events take place on weeknights before I would be able to get to that location.
Another large problem that I’ve run into is the reboot of the story. The Clan Wars story arc that started the original game hooked me like very few stories I’ve ever immersed myself in. While some of the characters and stories have changed, I don’t feel the same attachment as I once did.
This has been a large part of the problem since last August. After I returned from Gen*Con, I found out my grandmother had fallen and shattered a vertebra. While it didn’t require surgery, she has been quite hampered with her back since then. Beyond that, my workload at the college has increased threefold. With no end in sight to the workload, no help coming, and almost no work in my field for a good 50 mile radius, changing jobs would just swap work time with travel time for a small pay increase. Then there is the last item
My Other Project
I’ve been wanting to be a Game Designer for a long time. I guess you could say that I am following in the footsteps of many L5R players, past and present who also have had a dream:
Diamand Dan Dineen
In January of 2018, I started Alternate Dimensions Gaming LLC. When I failed to make it into the MTG Great Designer Search final 8, I began working on some designs I had set aside a few years ago: a Deck Building Game and a CCG / LCG. Both of them are set in the same world, a world that I have high hopes for. I want a product for players that gives them a fun but deep gameplay with a familiar setting, fantastic characters, breathtaking artwork and for players to have input on the direction of the story. My goal is to have at least one of the two games up on Kickstarter by next July.
There are countless number of players, designers, playtesters and tournament organizers that I have met throughout the years that have made L5R the great community that it is. While I will miss seeing across the table from me as an opponent, I hope to still see many of you at game stores and conventions across the county as I move forward with my dream.
The site is paid through May of 2019. The page will remain up until at least that point. I would be interested in transferring the site over to someone who would be interested in continuing the work of the Kolat. If you are interested in that, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will always be watching.
